The first set was almost a copy of the first set that Jannik Sinner and Rafael Nadal had already played against each other in the quarter-finals of the 2020 French Open. Back then, too, the young Italian started snotty, benefited from a few slight mistakes by the Spaniard and was able to put his stamp on the game - and with a score of 5: 3 he had the chance to win set one in two games.

From then on, however, the thread should break with the South Tyrolean, who at a score of 5: 4 played a fruitful service game - without a single first serve - and conceded the rebreak to zero. The break in this set, Nadal was now the much more active and better player on the field and made the 7: 5 in round one perfect with another break and his fourth game in a row.

Sinner with forgiven efforts in sentence two

This game continued seamlessly in the second round. Sinner was quite impressed by his self-fall and immediately lost the first four games. From 0: 4, the South Tyrolean, who was now increasingly picking himself up, was able to fight his way up to 3: 4, but then it was again the king at Bois de Bolougne who should take control. With 6: 3, the second round went to the Mallorcan.

Now Sinner's resistance was finally broken, especially since the 13-time Grand Slam winner was now in a real frenzy. Once again, the third in the world rushed off at an express train pace to 4-0. At this point the bull from Manacor already stopped at 30 winning strokes, while Sinner only had nine. So it was easy for the 35-year-old to give the South Tyrolean the maximum penalty in the third set and to make the quarter-finals perfect with 6-0.

In the quarter-finals, Rafael Nadal will now face Argentine Diego Schwartzman, who in turn knocked Jan-Lennard Struff out of the tournament in three sets in a crazy match. And in the semifinals? There could be a showdown with world number one Novak Djokovic, who was able to make up a 2-0 set deficit against a second young Italian, Lorenzo Musetti. Rafael Nadal was somewhat far from such a deficit this Monday.
