French Open: Two Swiss Juniors on the trail of Stan Wawrinka

One thing is certain even before the juniors final at the 2020 French Open: The winner will come from Switzerland. And thus succeed Stan Wawrinka , who won the Junior Grand Slam tournament in 2003.

Daniel Stephan Stricker or Leandro Riedi - one of these two young men will be on the list of winners of the French Open Junior Winners. And with that, albeit not in direct order, players like Andrey Rublev (2014), Cristian Garin (2013 - with a final win against Alexander Zverev ), Björn Frantangelo (who defeated Dominic Thiem in the final in 2011), Gael Monfils (2004), but especially to follow Stan Wawrinka. Because Stan the Man was the last Swiss to win as a junior in Roland Garros (against Brian Baker from the USA), before that Heinz Günthardt had already done this in 1976 (by the way, a year before John McEnroe, whose direct heir Ivan Lendl was).

If you go by the seeding list, no favorite can be identified: Stricker, who defeated the Austrian Lukas Neumayer in two sets in the quarter-finals, entered the tournament in seventh place. Riedi one place behind. In the semifinals, Stricker defeated the Argentine Juan Bautista Torres with the interesting result of 6: 0, 5: 7, 6: 0. Riedi had no problems in the 6: 3 and 6: 1 against the Dutchman Guy den Ouden.

Among the girls, the unseeded Russian Alina Chareva challenges the local hero Elsa Jacquemot, who entered the tournament in third place. The two most recent Swiss successes are not that long ago: Rebeka Masarova defeated Amanda Anisimova in the 2016 final, and Belinda Bencic defeated Antonia Lottner from Germany in the final in 2013. Unmatched, of course, is the great Martina Hingis, who won the junior title twice in 1993 and 1994.
