Inhospitable conditions for Dominic Thiem and Jürgen Melzer at the meeting of the group leaders as part of the Generali Austrian Pro Series: The wind had affected the games throughout Tuesday, and there was no sign of a well-tempered afternoon lull. The circumstances almost reminded of the semi-final of Thiem last year in Roland Garros, when the Austrian defeated Novak Djokovic in the extension of the fifth set.

Of course, the invitation tournament in the southern part of the city cannot go that far, but Thiem had to go through at least three rounds in the course of the preliminary round: against Sandro Kopp. Melzer, on the other hand, had used his entry fee right up to the start against Jurij Rodionov with the win in the tiebreak of the third set to the last cent.

Thiem and Melzer in the second group phase

There was not that much drama compared to the number three in the ATP world ranking with Melzer, who has been 38 years old for a few days: in the first round, the favorite was a break for 6: 3, right at the beginning of round two, Melzer had to do his service again submit. Dominic Thiem no longer gave this advantage out of his hand, but instead took his opponent's 5-2 serve again.

This result has no influence on the further course of the tournament. Both Thiem and Melzer had long been qualified for the second group phase.
