Hamburg European Open: Petkovic "dances" into the second round, Niemeier surprised

Three short hip swings after the last rally, a cheeky smile and great relief: Andrea Petkovic made it to the round of 16 at the Hamburg European Open with a lot of fighting spirit and a short taste of her "Petko-Dance". It also went well for the other German players.

In a tough match, 33-year-old Petkovic won against compatriot Anna-Lena Friedsam (Neuwied) 6: 4, 7: 5 and thus remains "her" tournament as a brand ambassador.

There are four German players on Rothenbaum in the last 16. It started with local hero Tamara Korpatsch, the 26-year-old was followed by qualifier Anna Zaja from Stuttgart, Dortmund's Jule Niemeier and finally Petkovic. "It was solid, at the beginning I made too many double mistakes," said the Hessian, who is now number two on the seeding list, Yulia Putintseva from Kazakhstan.

Niemeier takes Garcia out

It is already certain that a German player will reach the quarter-finals in the WTA tournament in the Hanseatic city, which has been revived after 19 years. Because there will be a duel between Niemeier and Korpatsch on Thursday at the event endowed with $ 250,000.

The Hamburger Korpatsch had little trouble against the qualifier Mandy Minella from Luxembourg (7: 5, 6: 3), Niemeier surprised with a courageous performance against the French Caroline Garcia (6: 4, 6: 2). Zaja did not let himself be disturbed by a messed up start against Viktoriya Tomova from Bulgaria and ultimately won with 0: 6, 6: 3, 7: 5.

Her next opponent is the Romanian Elena-Gabriela Ruse. On the other hand, Mona Barthel from Neumünster, who lost to the Slovakian Kristina Kucova 3: 6, 6: 7 (4: 7), was eliminated in the Hanseatic city of Neumünster.
