The good friends of course answered immediately. Immediately after her defeat, Julia Görges received two messages that were probably encouraging - one from Ashleigh Barty, the world number one, friend and double partner. And from Barty's father Robert. Görges did not want to reveal the content. "It's private," she said after the somewhat unfortunate 6-1, 6-7 (4-7), 2-6 against Alison Riske (USA) in the third round of the Australian Open.

However, Görges was irritated that she had not received a third message - from Rainer Schüttler, the captain of the German Fed Cup team. After the match, she wanted to talk to Schüttler, topic: The qualifying game in Brazil on February 7 and 8. Only: "I haven't seen Rainer anymore, he wasn't sitting in my box when I looked there," said Görges, and raised the question: "I don't know if he's still here at all."

When asked if she wanted to play at all, Görges replied cryptically: "If you analyze the past eleven years, you know that I like to represent my country." However, whether she will do it in Brazil remains open.

Upon request, Schüttler confirmed that he had seen Görges' match before leaving Melbourne on Friday. As for the Fed Cup in Brazil, he said: "You have to ask Julia. Barbara Rittner, Head of Women's Tennis, answered almost identically.

The fact that the Germans have to play in Brazil, strictly speaking in Florianopolis, is fundamentally unfavorable. The journey there is awkward from Australia. Angelique Kerber has also not yet agreed. One thing is clear for the time being: Görges, who struggled a bit with the wind and her poorly functioning service after her individual failure , initially stayed in Melbourne. Her double with Barty was scheduled for Saturday.
