Bitter news for the defending champion: Croatia has to make do without Marin Cilic in the Davis Cup finals. The US Open winner of 2014 struggling with knee problems and therefore will not open in Madrid.
An operation is not necessary, wrote CIlic on Instagram, however, the healing process will keep him away from the tennis court for a long time. "I'm extremely disappointed, but believe in my teammates and will be the biggest fan," said Cilic.
For Cilic ends an extremely sobering season thus with another setback. The Croat fell back in the world rankings in 39th place and had to plug in 2019 with only 22 wins 19 defeats. "I will work to make me feel healthier, more prepared and more motivated than ever before in 2020," the 31-year-old hopes to his fans.
For the Croatian Davis Cup team, of course, the cancellation of Cilic means a major setback. The team coached by Zeljko Krajan will face Russia and Spain in Group B. On the 18th of November Croatia gets involved with Russia, two days later against Spain.
