Rafael Nadal actually had a break on the opening day - but the 19-time major won’t take it easy. As a spectator and team partner, Nadal was fully involved from the first point in Dominic Thiem's match - and suffered almost more than if he had been on the court.
"Rafa is probably the one who gives you the most energy from the bank," said Alexander Zverev after day 1. "He acts as if he were playing - and that naturally gives you a lot of confidence."
Now the bull from Manacor can finally get out of the stable - or down from the sofa behind the player's bench. Nadal leads 7-2 against Milos Raonic - most recently they both faced each other at the Australian Open in 2017, where Nadal and Federer made their big comeback after injury-related time-outs and Nadal won in three rounds against Raonic in the quarter-finals.
What about the Laver Cup?
Team Europe is currently in the lead: after the victories of Dominic Thiem (6: 4, 5: 7, [13:11] against Denis Shapovalov), Jack Sock over Fabio Fognini (6: 1, 7: 6 (3)) and Stefanos Tsitsipas over Taylor Fritz (6: 2, 1: 6, [10: 7]) as well as Roger Federer and Alexander Zverev over Denis Shapovalov and Jack Sock (6: 4, 7: 5) was Team Europe with 3: 1 from the Premieres day went out.
On Saturday, there are two counters per match.
The game between Nadal and Raonic is scheduled for 7 p.m., then Nadal and Tsitsipas in doubles against Kyrgios and Jack Sock.
