Markus Wislsperger is Maximilian Marterer's coach at Wimbledon. Marterer fought his way through the qualification with ease, in round one he will face Aljaz Bedene. And Wislsperger looked after him for over a year. Before talking to tennisnet, the trainer observed a training session between Novak Djokovic and the young Czech Jiri Lehecka.

tennisnet : Mr. Wislsperger. Why is Novak Djokovic still the man to beat for everyone here?

Markus Wislsperger : Because Novak is the most stable player in the corners. He can generate pace. The whole package is just right. If he played a little more forward he would be even more dangerous.

tennisnet : How do you like Jiri Lehecka?

Wislsperger : Maxi played Traralgon against him. It was a very close match at the Challenger, which Lehecka won 7:5 in the third set. The package is also very stable from the baseline, both sides are similarly strong, serves well - there is nothing to complain about.

tennisnet : How do you see your protégé at the moment?

Wislsperger : Maxi is back on the way to where he was before. It was good at the beginning of the year, but the results are a bit lacking. He actually only played a few not so good matches. He qualifies to a challenger, beating Roman Safiullin and then losing to a Scott Draper who goes on to win four challengers. To turn a match like that or to win the whole tournament - then the self-confidence would be back. We know that Maxi can play.

tennisnet : How does Maximilian Marterer's game fit on grass?

Wislsperger : Maxi plays well on grass or carpet, i.e. generally on faster surfaces. He just has to accept it. And it's not that fast anymore.

tennisnet : The qualification traditionally took place in Roehampton. What are the differences between the courts there and those here in Wimbledon?

Wislsperger : We trained here for the first time today, with Bernabe Zapata Miralles. It seems a little slower. You can get used to whether the ball jumps one or two centimeters higher. The running work is clearly different to other rubbers.

tennisnet : As the Marterer team, how much value did you place on this grass season?

Wislsperger : To be honest, we didn't do any specific preparation. We stayed on ashes. For him, I wanted Maxi to maintain a certain rhythm of the game. And lawns are just different because a lot has to be improvised. We just came here like that. I've had the same experience: Sometimes more preparation is even worse for a tournament.

tennisnet : Aljaz Bedene is waiting in the first round. A player you know very well...

Wislsperger : I once trained Aljaz for a year. He's a very, very talented player. There are better lots, but there are also worse lots. We saw each other briefly yesterday and we both had to smile.

tennisnet : From a global perspective: Who can beat Novak Djokovic here?

Wislsperger : When Rafael Nadal comes to a tournament, he also wants to win it. You shouldn't underestimate a player like Stefanos Tsitsipas either. And Matteo Berrettini is also difficult to play when he serves well and then follows up with the forehand. And if the slice stays flat, you never know what's going to happen.
