According to the regulation, at least one player must be among the top 250 in the ATP world rankings for each starting country. Austria no longer meets this criterion after Dominic Thiem's and now Dennis Novak's refusals. As the Kronen Zeitung reported on Tuesday , Novak canceled its start for the team event Down Under for health reasons.

The Lower Austrian could not be reached for a statement at first, and there is currently no information about Austria's cancellation on the official homepage for the ATP Cup. The fact is that in the event that Dennis Novak refuses, the passage quoted at the beginning could actually be relevant. Lucas Miedler, Alex Erler and the double duo Marach / Oswald are not included in the top 250 of the ATP singles world rankings.

At the moment it is unclear whether Jurij Rodionov will be the only representative of Austria in singles Down Under. Dennis Novak has not yet announced anything about his start at the Australian Open, while Dominic Thiem canceled his start at the first major tournament of the year on Tuesday. The former world number three will instead start the 2022 season in Cordoba at the end of January.
