The Wimbledon finalist pleaded guilty to pushing his then-girlfriend to the ground during an argument in January 2021, but escaped a conviction for what the judge called "a single act of stupidity".

"I know it wasn't okay and I'm truly sorry for the pain I caused," Kyrgios said in a statement after the Canberra judge's verdict.

The victim had lodged a complaint with the police ten months after the incident, after Kyrgios and she broke up. In a statement read in court, the woman said she was severely traumatized by the incident, suffered severe weight loss, and stayed in bed day and night - unable to sleep or form new romantic relationships.

Kyrgios suffers from depression

Kyrgios' lawyers had referred to his mental health during the course of the trial. A psychologist told the court that Kyrgios suffered from recurring major depressions that included black periods, thoughts of self-harm, insomnia, restlessness and feelings of guilt.

Kyrgios is currently 20th in the world rankings and missed the Australian Open due to injury. The allegations against him became known during the Wimbledon tournament last summer. On the advice of his lawyers, Kyrgios initially did not comment on the allegations.
