There was nothing to get for the two Austrian veterans: Oliver Marach and Philipp Oswald had to admit defeat to third-placed Colombians Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah in the round of 16 in Tokyo. In round one, Marach / Oswald had won against the two Australians John Millman and Luke Saville.

The tournament favorites Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic had to fight hard with Lorenzo Musetti and Lorenzo Sonego: The two Croatians, who last won at Wimbledon, finally won 7: 5, 6: 7 (5) and 10: 7.
