The world number five from Hamburg had no problems with the blatant outsider Lu Yen-Hsun from Taiwan on Sunday, only number 573 in the ranking. After only 59 minutes, Zverev won in the oppressive midday heat of Tokyo 6: 1, 6: 3 and was able to rely above all on his strong serve.

In the second round, the US Open finalists will not face too high a hurdle either, they will face either the Colombian Daniel Elahi Galan or Mohamed Safwat from Egypt. As a goal, Zverev issued a medal at his first Olympic Games. In the semifinals he could meet the absolute top favorite Novak Djokovic (Serbia).

Zverev is also pursuing his medal dream in doubles. There the 24-year-old reached the round of 16 on Saturday alongside Jan-Lennard Struff (Warstein). A start in mixed is still open, the decision will be made by Tuesday.

Also at the start on Sunday is Philipp Kohlschreiber, who had an extremely tough opening task with Stefanos Tsitsipas.
