Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini and US hope Cori Gauff will also not take part in the Olympic tennis tournament in Tokyo. Italy's Olympic Committee CONI announced on Sunday that the 25-year-old Berrettini had to cancel due to a muscle injury. A few hours later, Gauff announced on Twitter that she had tested positive for Corona and could therefore not play at the Olympics.

The world number eight Berrettini and Gauff join a long list of prominent players who will not be at the start in Japan. Among others, Roger Federer (Switzerland), Rafael Nadal (Spain), Angelique Kerber (Kiel) and Serena Williams (USA) are missing.

Berrettini is said to have sustained the injury at Wimbledon, where he was the first Italian to reach the individual final. There he lost to world number one Novak Djokovic (Serbia). Gauff made it to the round of 16 at Wimbledon, but failed there because of the later semi-finalist Kerber. At the French Open before, she had reached the quarter-finals.
