The 2021 Wimbledon final already promised one thing above all with a look at the starting position: high tension. Because for Novak Djokovic, the number one in the tennis world, Church Road was about nothing less than the level of Grand Slam victories with his toughest rivals Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer - Matteo Berrettini, on the other hand, tried his hand at his first final Major level equal to the really big hit.

Accordingly, both players started very nervously, Berrettini held against it almost only thanks to his good serves. In the rallies Djokovic then got more and more security, shifted to keeping the balls in play. Which was enough to make it 5: 2 - the mistakes came constantly from the other side. But then the comeback of Berrettini: A forehand that the Hawk-Eye just gave, a nice net action, and the rebreak was there. In the tie-break Berrettini left a 3-0, but then he grabbed the forehand and got the first round with an ace.

Berrettini with the "almost comeback" in sentence two

Bitter: He left a 40:15 in the opening game of the second round - and Djokovic then cruised away to a quick 4-0. Then there were some poor concentration. The second attempt to save the sentence, the Djoker showed his whole class. Percentage serve to the outside and backhand cross to 15: 0, then the ace, another first serve. And a good second one to compensate for sentences. Although the Italian was able to catch up from 1: 5 to 4: 5.

In the third round it was again the Serb who should break an early break. Thanks to a simple volleyball mistake by his Italian opponent, the industry leader had an opportunity in the third game of the set that the 34-year-old also knew how to use. The Serbian could not take this lead in this sentence, because with his own serve the number one in the tennis world remained stable and transported the lead to 6: 4 in the third round.

Djokovic makes history

In the fourth round Berrettini was able to avoid an early break, had a score of 3: 2 from his point of view a 0:30 on Djokovic's serve - but then had to admit enviously that you can make the point well and gladly two or three times against Novak Djokovic got to. At 3:30 p.m. in particular, the Serb played a sensational rally from the defensive, bringing the otherwise pro-Berrettini audience to a standstill in his favor a rare time. And a little later won the game to 3: 3.

And what does a Novak Djokovic do after such moments? The Serb now played his best tennis on this tennis afternoon, earning himself a break chance in sensational rallies, which the 34-year-old was able to utilize after a double error by Berrettini. The preliminary decision in this match. Matteo Berrettini could not oppose anything in this final when Djokovic served and finally had to admit defeat in four sets.

Djokovic draws the same

What this triumph means to the world number one, the Serb showed a few seconds after the transformed match point. The 34-year-old went down, his first way back on his feet then led Djokovic to his box - with which he wanted to celebrate this triumph first.

With this, Novak Djokovic managed to make history at Wimbledon 2021. For the man from Belgrade it is now the 20th triumph at major level, so the youngest representative of the "Big Three" has drawn level with his long-term rivals Federer and Nadal. And by the way, the "Djoker" also has the chance to win the historic "Calendar Grand Slam", i.e. all major events in a calendar year. The only thing missing is the title win in New York in the fall, after the Australian and French Open - and now also Wimbledon 2021 - have gone to Novak Djokovic.
