Thanks to her strong performances in the first two rounds, Naomi Osaka had become the top favorite early on to win the tournament at the Olympic Games, but it won't be a home win in Tokyo: The Japanese lost in the second round to 42nd place in the world. Marketa Vondrousova with 1: 6 and 4: 6.

In the first set in particular, almost everything went wrong with the four-time Grand Slam winner, and the slower conditions due to the roofed center court seemed anything but to please. Osaka managed an early break in the second section, but Vondrousova hit back immediately and ended the local hero’s dream of the title with another break to 6: 4.

While Osaka lost for the first time since the Australian Open 2020 in a hard court tournament before the quarter-finals, the French Open finalist of 2019 was able to look forward to one of her biggest wins. In the round of the last eight, Vondrousova will now face Paula Badosa or Nadia Podoroska.
