Padel: Austria's women create a sensation

At the European qualification tournament for the WORLD PADEL Championships Dubai 2022 this weekend in Derby, an Austrian women's national team competed internationally for the first time. In a group with Great Britain (currently No. 16 in the padel world rankings) and Lithuania, the lot presented the Baltic women as the first challenge.

Public transport supervisor Octavio Santana (who also managed the preparation) nominated the couples Alexandra Pils/Elea Bechtler, Barbara Prenner/Anna Schmid and Rebeca Fernandez Niederacher/Sabrina Urban. The start was extremely bad, the pairing Pils/Bechtler (also handicapped by knee problems) lost the game against the strong Lithuanians. So Prenner/Schmid were under a lot of pressure in the top game against Ieva Ceilutkaite/Aukse Maciulaityte. After a tie, the third set had to decide.

Here the Austrians quickly fell behind by 1:4, then showed extreme fighting spirit and won the deciding set with loud support from their teammates and the men's national team 7:5. So it was up to Fernandez Niederacher/Urban to fix the win against Ruta Balalyte/Kristina Matvijenko. What the two also mastered, they won 6:1, 6:1 in 35 minutes and secured the 2:1 victory over the Lithuanians with great cheering.

Thus, the national team was able to make the first appearance in an official international team competition victorious.
