The 34-year-old lost to the sixth in the world rankings from Estonia after a good start 6: 3, 4: 6, 4: 6. For Kerber it was the fifth defeat in a row.

Kerber had won her home tournament on clay in 2015 and 2016, and in 2018 she also failed there in the second round to Kontaveit. The three-time Grand Slam winner traveled to Stuttgart directly from Kazakhstan, where she had lost her two singles in Germany's 1: 3 in the Billie Jean King Cup.

In the afternoon, one day after her first success on the WTA professional tour, the German champion Eva Lys was clearly beaten by the world number one Iga Swiatek from Poland with 1: 6, 1: 6 . "Every minute with a player like her is worth a week of training," said the 20-year-old from Hamburg.

On Tuesday, the Kyiv-born qualifier, number 342 in the world rankings, knocked out Swiss Viktorija Golubic in three sets.
