The trip to Abu Dhabi brought Rafael Nadal an initial assessment of his position after a long injury break - but also a positive test for the corona virus. The Spaniard announced this today on Twitter.

At the Mubadala World Tennis Championships Nadal lost to Andy Murray after a bye in the semifinals, the game for third place was lost by the 20-time major winner to Denis Shapovalov. Before that, Nadal's last appearance at the ATP Tour 500 tournament in Washington took place.

A start at the Australian Open, which begins on January 17, 2022, has thus become a little less likely. Nadal himself had already expressed doubts in Abu Dhabi as to whether he would actually take part in the first Grand Slam tournament of the season in Melbourne.
