It's not often that Roger Federer opens a matchday. After the maestro in Indian Wells has traveled with the whole family, one can confidently assume that Federer is not one of the late risers. Scheduling the quarterfinals against Hubert Hurkacz at eleven o'clock local time also meant that the grandstands were significantly better filled than in previous days at the same time.

Hurkacz, who started the tournament as number 67 in the world, started confidently against the five-time title holder, but the first break was still the favorite to make it 3-2. After half an hour, the 37-year-old Swiss had wrapped up the first set 6: 4 injured.

It was Federer who ultimately managed the only break in set two: for 2-1. That was enough for the Swiss to win the game 6-4 and 6-4 after 73 minutes.

In the semifinals on Saturday it could now be a classic with Rafael Nadal. The prerequisite for this is a victory of the Spaniard in the last quarter-final against Karen Khachanov. Dominic Thiem and Milos Raonic play the second semi-final.
