So Dominic Thiem didn't want to move into the final round of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament from Indian Wells: without having to play a single ball. Gael Monfils, however, had felt pain on the Achilles tendon in the course of Thursday and could not compete for the quarter-finals. The Frenchman, who had given Philipp Kohlschreiber no chance in the round before, explained the disappointed audience live on the court.

Thiem faces Milos Raonic in the semifinals. The Canadian, who was on the verge of retirement in round three against US-American qualifier Marco Giron, had no problems with Lucky Loser Miomir Kecmanovic in 6: 3 and 6: 4. Thiem has lost the two previous games against the Canadian, both in 2016: at the tournament in Cincinnati and the ATP Finals in London.
