Roger Federer already had problems at the Australian Open

The year started not bad for Roger Federer, at the Australian Open the Swiss made it through to the semi-finals despite some problems, where he lost to Novak Djokovic. The planned revenge next week in Dubai is now canceled - as are the subsequent appearances in Indian Wells, Miami (where Federer would have been the defending champion) and at the French Open. The replacement date in Bogota for the fall exhibition with Alexander Zverev also falls flat. This was announced by Federer on Instagram.

His doctors advised him to have an operation on his knee, which was carried out in Switzerland on Wednesday. Most recently, Federer had an exhibition fight with Rafael Nadal in favor of his foundation in Cape Town, but his knee had tormented him for a long time.

Federer will fall behind in the world rankings

Federer will thus fall significantly behind in the world rankings - after all, he had to defend 1,600 points in Indian Wells and Miami alone, as well as 720 for the qualification round of Roland Garros 2019, where he lost to Rafael Nadal.

Federer will only make his comeback on grass. In addition to its regular tournament in Halle / Westphalia, the MercedesCup in Stuttgart could also be an option here. Roger Federer had reached his last Grand Slam final at Wimbledon last year.
