Andy Murray and the French Open have been a solid working relationship for most of the years the Scot has been making his money on the tennis circuit. In 2016, Murray was even in the final at the Bois de Boulogne. But that was … 2016. Seven years later, the two-time gold medalist at the Olympic Games has to manage his strength differently. And maybe take a break from tournaments where effort and income do not (any longer) match.

Of the four majors, that in Paris is now the shakiest at the current stage of Andy Murray's career. And after his early exit in Monte Carlo, the 35-year-old veteran even considered stopping playing on clay for this year and only coming back on grass.
Murray not unhappy despite losing to Fognini
This plan didn't work out, and Andy Murray celebrated an emotional tournament victory in Aix-en-Provence last week. "Only" on the ATP Challenger Tour, but at least one with 175 points for the ATP world rankings. No wonder Murray then seemed a bit tired against Fabio Fognini in Rome on Wednesday evening, especially at the beginning. But after the 4: 6, 6: 4 and 4: 6 against the local hero he was not completely dissatisfied with himself.
"There was a lot of patchwork in the match," Murray explained. “There were some good things, but also some pretty average things. He played really well in the third set. My level was ok there.”
Effects on a start in Roland Garros? "I would still like to play, but we agreed that we would make the decision after Rome," said Murray. "I wanted to see how my game felt, how I would physically play in some of the longer matches before making a final decision." These discussions will be held in the coming days.
