Federer had taken a break after his charity match with Rafael Nadal in South Africa and had an operation on his knee. However, the cure was not optimal, as Coach Severin Lüthi explained in the Swiss media at the weekend. Now Federer did nails with heads - via Twitter, he announced that another minor intervention was necessary. And he plans to return to the tour in early 2021.

At the beginning of the year, Roger Federer had reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open - but on the way there with John Millman and Tennys Sandgren had the worst problems. In the semi-final against Novak Djokovic was over. The 20-time Grand Slam champion no longer competed in his second "home" tournament next to Basel, in Dubai.

In 2016, the almost 39-year-old had to take a longer break - and came back triumphantly at the Australian Open. At that time Federer defeated Rafael Nadal in the final, before that he had prevailed against Stan Wawrinka and Kei Nishikori.
