The Erste Bank Open is one of those tennis tournaments in 2020 that will take place despite the uncertainties surrounding COVID-19. A risk that is well rewarded. In the Wiener Stadthalle, the 1000 fans who are admitted per session can look forward to the best field of participants since the tournament began. Seven top 10 players will be playing in the Austrian capital.

The reigning US Open winner and world number three Dominic Thiem will start the race as the defending champion in Vienna. Before the 27-year-old will (probably) join the tournament on Tuesday, there were still many business appointments to be made at home. Including a promo video with sponsor Red Bull, which shows Thiem playing tennis with his buddy Dennis Novak through Vienna.

From Schönbrunn Palace via St. Stephen's Cathedral to the Stadthale: The two advertising signs of Austrian tennis show what Vienna has to offer in addition to world-class tennis in the next few days. A pleasure that the players will probably not get during their stay in Vienna this year, the organizers around tournament director Herwig Straka also rely on the tried and tested bubble concept, which has already been implemented with some success in New York City and Paris.

While Jan-Lennard Struff is leading the qualifying draw that started this Saturday, the main field is brimming with top players. World number one, Novak Djokovic, will start the race , Dominic Thiem, Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas complete the top four on the seeding list. The draw for the Erste Bank Open is scheduled for 12:00 noon today. All the games in the ATP 500 event are offered on TV or stream by Red Bull broadcaster ServusTV. The public service ORF also broadcasts selected games.
