So far, 2020 was a roller coaster ride for Stan Wawrinka. The season started for the Swiss at the ATP 250 event in Doha. Wawrinka was able to play in the semi-finals, but had to play quarter-finals and semi-finals in one day. The Swiss tribute had to pay this double burden and lost to the Frenchman Corentin Moutet in three sets in the last four. Stan Wawrinka also struggled with his fitness at the beginning of the Australian Open. The Swiss traveled to the first Grand Slam of the year with a fever and had to struggle in the first two rounds.

But Wawrinka was able to take out both Damir Dzumhur and Andreas Seppi and benefited in lap three from an injury-related task by John Isner. Visibly regenerated, Stan Wawrinka therefore achieved one of the biggest surprises in Melbourne in the round of 16: In 34 sets, the 34-year-old favorite Daniil Medvedev was able to take out of the tournament . But this fight had also left its mark on the 2014 Australian Open champion and so he was beaten in the top eight by Alexander Zverev.

Stan Wawrinka has not announced exactly what injury is currently causing the Swiss. Very well, however, that he will not contest the tournaments in Montpellier and Rotterdam. “Sometimes things don't go the way you want them to. Unfortunately, due to an injury, I have to withdraw my start at the ATP event in Montpellier. But I will hopefully be back on the court soon, ”Wawrinka wrote on Instagram. A little later he announced via Twitter that he would also not be able to start in Rotterdam. The next appearance of the Swiss is planned in Acapulco.

It is not the first prominent cancellation for the organizers in Montpellier. Andrey Rublev and Fabio Fognini have already withdrawn from the ATP 250 event in France. They both struggled with some tiring appearances at the Australian Open. Top placed in Montpellier is Gael Monfils, whose Australian Open ended in a round of 16 defeat against the later finalist Dominic Thiem. In Montpellier, by the way, another Austrian had benefited from Wawrinka's cancellation: Dennis Novak slipped into the peloton for the Swiss.
