The 35-year-old tennis professional from Switzerland announced this on Thursday on Twitter. "After I had problems with my left foot for a while, I decided to have a small operation," Wawrinka wrote about a photo from the hospital bed. The intervention "went well".

Most recently, Wawrinka, who won Olympic gold in doubles alongside Grand Slam record champion Roger Federer in 2008, lost his opening matches at the ATP tournaments in Doha and Rotterdam. The second round of the Australian Open in Melbourne was the final destination. Wawrinka last served in Doha, where he was eliminated early on against Lloyd Harris from South Africa.

Like some other prominent players, Wawrinka has already done without taking part in the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Miami. Now it remains to be seen how long the Swiss break will last. After all, Wawrinka certainly doesn't want to miss too much of the clay court season.
