Who knows whether the French Tennis Association has cleverly exploited the emergency situation caused by the corona pandemic - as the L'Equipe reports, the French Open will have floodlights on a total of twelve courts from the next event. To date, the residents of the facility have always vetoed the fact that longer seasons in Roland Garros were technically possible.

But since a roof over the Court Philippe-Chatrier has been available since this year, it can be assumed that the French Open will play longer anyway. And if the organizers should plan to actually play the only major on sand from September 27th, floodlight games are an absolute necessity simply because of the shorter days.

The US Open and the Australian Open have of course played with floodlights for a long time. In Wimbledon two courts with roof and artificial light are now available. However, this is not an option for the outside spaces on Church Road: on the one hand, with the dawn, the moisture comes, which makes the lawn areas too slippery. Secondly, there are also many residents in the Wimbledon district of London who are concerned about their night's sleep.
