10 direct points - with 27 own mistakes, plus a great opponent who forced Thiem on the defensive more often than he was right: Thiem's end against the Serbian Dusan Lajovic came as a surprise, but was explainable after the game. Thiem continued matter-of-factly: "It's just a Masters tournament. A bit worse performance is enough to be outside."

Thiem to Barcelona today

The conditions in Monte Carlo are anything but Thiem-friendly. "There are a few things here that are strange for me. The space is slow, the service is not a big advantage," said Thiem, who is still waiting for his first semifinals in the Principality.

The story continues for Lichtenwörther, who will start in Spain next week. "I am very motivated for Barcelona and I am looking to get back into tournament mode as soon as possible," said Thiem.
