Toni Nadal is positive about the Davis Cup reform

At the end of 2017, Toni Nadal finally withdrew from the active coaching of his nephew Rafael in order to concentrate on the tasks at the Rafa Nadal Tennis Academy in Mallorca. However, this does not mean that the usual opinionated Toni would not continue to observe developments in world tennis - and would also comment if necessary.

And hardly any topic has caused more discussion in the past few months than the reform of the traditional Davis Cup competition, the winner of which will be determined in a week-long tournament in Madrid in 2019. Several players like this year's finalist Pierre-Hugues Herbert or the Austrian legend Jürgen Melzer think little or nothing of the changes, other top players such as Alexander Zverev have already ruled out to compete in the Spanish capital next November.

Great memories of Madrid, Barcelona, Seville

Toni Nadal, however, breaks a lance for his compatriot Gerard Piqué, who with his Kosmos consortium did the persuading work of the ITF member states. "I liked the Davis Cup the way it was before," said Nadal in an interview with A La Contra. “The best memories I have are the Davis Cup matches we played in Madrid, Seville and Barcelona. But this is no longer feasible these days because the calendar no longer allows the best players to take part more often. ”

Nephew Rafael had contributed to the German team after an injury break in Valencia in April, but had to pass after the US Open in the semi-final against France. “The whole situation is very difficult, but I think Piqué's approach is good. He tried to change something and set up an attractive national competition. And I hope that he succeeds. "
