After the situation in the UK had worsened over the past few days, the signs had long been on the calendar's cancellation of the most prestigious tennis tournament. As of today, it is official: The Wimbledon 2020 tournament will not take place. The matches of the main fields should have started on Monday, June 29th. With the cancellation in Wimbledon, however, the cancellation of the entire lawn season will also go hand in hand - as far as the events of the men in Halle / Westphalia and the MercedesCup in Stuttgart are concerned in Germany. On the women's side, the tournaments in Bad Homburg and Berlin have to wait until 2021 for their premiere.

For tennis fans, the next hope for Grand Slam tennis is the prospect of the US Open, which is due to take place in New York City at the end of August. Which is by no means certain given the dramatic situation in the United States. The French Open moved back a few days ago, choosing a start date on September 20, 2020, which had caused displeasure among all parties involved. Mostly because the French had gone it alone.

This is the first time Wimbledon has failed since 1945. So far, only the two world wars prevented the tournament from being held on Church Road. Novak Djokovic and Simona Halep will be the defending champions next year.
