Daniil Medvedev faced Marin Cilic in the third round of Wimbledon

The first round was characterized by the serve strength of the two players, who only wobbled in one game - Marin CIlic initially managed the first break of the game, but Medvedev managed the rebreak immediately. As a result, both the Russian and the Croatian remained sovereign, a tiebreak consequently had to bring the decision to round one. In this Cilic presented himself in excellent shape, made a lot of steam, especially with the forehand and thus secured set one.

This key continued in the second movement: Cilic had now gained self-confidence and found his timing, especially with the forehand. One of these also brought the former Grand Slam winner the early break in round two - Medvedev was now under a lot of pressure. Because even in the episode, the world number two did not find any solutions for the Croatian's offensive game.

Cilic secures 2-0 set lead

So it was hardly surprising that Marin Cilic was able to secure two set balls with a sensational inside-out return winner at a score of 5: 3, the first of which the Croat also converted after a double fault by Medvedev. The 32-year-old confirmed his impressive condition on grass in the first two sets, and Cilic was already able to convince with his triumph in Stuttgart in preparation for Wimbledon.

Medvedev, who has never been able to make up a 2-0 set deficit in his career, then caught himself a little in the third round and increased the pressure on server Cilic noticeably. This wobbled in the fifth game of the set for the first time, was able to fend off two break chances in an exemplary manner, but lost a more than feasible forehand on the third: Break Medvedev.

Cilic scatters a lot in sentence three

That gave the world number two boost: Cilic now scattered too much (especially on the second serve), conceded another break and was quickly 2: 5 behind. The Croatian recovered afterwards, managed the rebreak and, with a score of 40: 0, had three chances to make round three exciting again. But then the 32-year-old made a self-fall, hit two double mistakes and after another unforced mistake - in total there were 20 in this set - had to give up the run with 3: 6.

Now the game was finally tipped in favor of the Russian. Marin Cilic was completely off the roll at the start of the fourth round and gave the world number two a lot of easy points. Medvedev also knew how to use that, the Russian took the break in the first setback game of the set and quickly pulled away. With another 6: 3, Medvedev sent the game into a decisive set a few moments later.

Medvedev now against Hurkacz

Medvedev took the tailwind from the last two sets with him right from the start into the fifth round. The Russian managed the break in the first game of the set - Cilic, on the other hand, now looked visibly dissatisfied. With his performance, but also with the performance of the referee. With that the resistance of the Croat was broken. Daniil Medvedev secured two more breaks and secured his ticket for the round of 16 with 6: 2.

In the round of 16, Medvedev will now face the Pole Hubert Hurkacz, who had no problems with the Kazakh trickster Alexander Bublik on Saturday afternoon. In the quarter-finals, there could be a big hit against Roger Federer, who the world number two had described as one of the most unpleasant opponents for his game in the run-up to the Grand Slam. The Swiss face the formally strong Italian Lorenzo Sonego in the second round.
