At the Australian Open and the French Open, number 178 in the world rankings failed to qualify. Three of Zhang's compatriots had made it into the peloton in Melbourne over the past few years.

China's tennis players have so far been significantly more successful at the Grand Slam tournaments. Li Na won 2011 in Paris, three years later she triumphed at the Australian Open. At Wimbledon she reached the quarterfinals three times. Zheng Jie even made it to the semi-finals in London in 2008. With Antoine Hoang, Zhang was assigned a solvable task in round one.
