Alejandro Davidovich Fokina retired in a particularly bitter way

Grand Slam matches in early phases with the participation of Alejandro Davidovich Fokina are usually a guarantee for thrillers - and great drama. Wimbledon 2022 was no exception. In round one, the Spaniard threw co-favorite Hubert Hurkacz out of the tournament after three missed match balls with a 2-0 set lead in the champions tie-break of the fifth set, but in the second round it was to be even more curious.

An absolute tennis thriller quickly developed against Jiri Vesely. The Czech secured the first round, Davidovich Fokina countered with 7:5 and 7:6 (2). Now it was Jiri Vesely's turn again, the 28-year-old forced a deciding set 6:3.

Davidovich Fokina with the next five-movement thriller

In this it should now finally be dramatic. First Vesely presented with a break and had the chance to make the preliminary decision with another one, then Alejandro Davidovich Fokina managed the rebreak. The consequence: the Spaniard went into a champions tiebreak again.

This should have a particularly bitter ending for Davidovich Fokina: Vesely got two match balls when the score was 9:7, the Spaniard was very dissatisfied with this circumstance and shot a ball towards the stands. The crux of the matter: This was equivalent to a warning - and also the point penalty. Which meant something like: Game, Set, and Match, Jiri Vesely.
