Angelique Kerber stays on course in her favorite Grand Slam. The 2018 Wimbledon winner also won her second match at the All England Club without dropping a set and after 6: 3, 6: 3 over Magda Linette from Poland followed Jule Niemeier and Tatjana Maria in the round of the best 32 players.

There, Kerber meets Elise Mertens or Panna Udvardy. The girl from Kiel, who reached the semi-finals last year, is also the favorite in this match. Against Linette, Kerber built on their sovereign opening win. Unlike the first duel with the 30-year-old, on the way to her only title of the season so far on clay in Strasbourg, Kerber (34) did not have to play in the third set this time.

After the tournament debutant Jule Niemeier, Tatjana Maria, twelve years older than her, also surprised in the second round of Wimbledon from a German point of view on Wednesday afternoon. The mother-of-two beat 26th-seeded Romanian Sorana Cirstea 6-3, 1-6, 7-5, equaling her best result at the All England Club. In 2015, Maria reached the third round for the first time.

Raducanu fails, Maria continues

There she meets either the Greek Maria Sakkari, number five on the seeding list, or Wiktorija Tomowa from Bulgaria on Friday. After her opening win, Maria was already proud of her "first Grand Slam victory" with two children. In April 2021 she gave birth to her second daughter and quickly reconnected after the birth.

For Emma Raducanu, the British summer fairy tale came to an abrupt end in Wimbledon on Wednesday. The US Open winner from 2021 had to admit defeat to Frenchwoman Croline Garcia with 3: 6 and 3: 6 on center court. Last year, the Brit had reached the round of 16 at her home Grand Slam.
