"If she does something, she does it right," said Kerber (34) on Saturday, two days before the start of the tournament at the facility in south-west London. Williams (40), seven-time title holder on the "Holy Lawn", makes her comeback on Tuesday. She meets the French Harmony Tan.

Kerber and Williams have already faced each other twice in the final at Wimbledon: Williams won in 2016 and Kerber in 2018. For the woman from Kiel, Williams' return is an achievement in itself. "I take off all my hats that she has made herself fit again," said Kerber: "She knows what she can do. She has won so many titles here, and grass is one of her best surfaces."

Kerber believes in her chance

Kerber does not see a clear favorite to win the tournament, even if serial winner Iga Swiatek (Poland) stands out. "She plays with a lot of self-confidence and also well on grass, you have to beat her first," said Kerber about the world number one, who has not lost in 35 matches. But: "There are so many good grass players who can win here."

She counts herself among them, last year she proved by reaching the semi-finals that she is still one of the best in the world on grass. "I still have the strengths that made me win Grand Slams," said Kerber. Her first round match will take place on Monday against Frenchwoman Kristina Mladenovic.
