At some point in the middle of the second set, Carlos Alcaraz and Jan-Lennard Struff could no longer hear their shots, the rain was pounding so loudly on the roof of Court 1. The two opponents were able to deal with it well, after all they had the privilege of playing - during most of the other colleagues had to be patient or interrupt their matches. Another side effect: the grandstands at Einser were as good as full, the atmosphere was great.

The sympathies were probably more on the side of the young Spaniard, it was never unfair.

Alcaraz uses his second match ball

It was the second meeting of the two in a Grand Slam tournament, last year Struff had asserted himself in three sets in the third round of Roland Garros. This time it was much closer. Especially because the German, who had to sit out a long time due to a toe injury, acted extremely aggressively. And served extraordinarily well in the decisive moments. As with the first breakball in the fifth set - Alcaraz was able to sniff a preliminary decision at 30:40. But Struff risked a lot on the second service. And was rewarded for it.

A few moments later, Alcaraz was allowed to celebrate a break. Struff helped with a double fault and a volley that was too long, and the teenager then got the 5: 4 with a powerful forehand. Alcaraz put his first match point next to the line with his backhand, but he used the second after a playing time of 4:10 hours.

As an opponent in round two, Carlos Alcaraz is waiting for the winner of the game between Tallon Griekspoor and Fabio Fognini.
