A double fault was not the worthy ending this match between Ons Jabeur and Elise Mertens on Court 1 deserved. But it doesn't help: Mertens put a second serve into the net at a score of 6: 7 (9), 4: 5 and 30:40, Jabeur was relieved to stretch his arms towards the London night sky. And look forward to reaching the quarterfinals.
There, the winner of Madrid and Berlin meets Marie Bouzkova, who won in two sets against Caroline Garcia in the first game of the day on Court 2. Jabeur, number two in the world and number three in the tournament, is arguably the favorite to win the Wimbledon title this year.
As is well known, two German players will contest the second semi-final in the lower half: Jule Niemeier, after her smooth success against Heather Watson, will face Tatjana Maria on Tuesday, who fended off two match points against Jelena Ostapenko and still scored 5: 7, 7: 5 and won 7:5.
