Wimbledon 2022: Marathon players in tennis clothes

The first two days of the doubles competition at Wimbledon have seen some pretty long games.

How was it? Everything goes faster in doubles, after all the rallies are shorter there? Well, that may be the rule. But sometimes there are exceptions. And then the whole beautiful schedule just goes down the drain. The match between Philipp Oswald and Hans Hach Verdugo against Roman Jebavy and Hunter Reese was scheduled for Wednesday at 11 a.m. local time. Due to a small, local interim low, the four doubles experts only started shortly after half past twelve. And then they really took their time. Namely until 5:24 p.m.

With a better end for Oswald and Hach Verdugo, who will probably go their separate ways after Wimbledon. The Vorarlberger and the Mexican won 6: 2, 6: 7 (8), 4: 6, 7: 6 (5) and 7: 6 (9). In round two it's against the French Nicolas Mahut and Edouard Roger-Vasselin, who did not hesitate with Francisco Cerundolo and Tomas Etcheverry.

Kyrgios pulls out of doubles competition

Well, you don't have to agree with everything Nick Kyrgios says. But his criticism of the best-of-five format in round one of the doubles at Wimbledon? Yes, please! In addition, where the game is played without the no-ad rule. Kyrgios then decided not to compete in pair skating alongside Thanasi Kokkinakis.

On Thursday Tim Pütz made his experiences with the marathon format - but not nice ones. Because Pütz, seeded fifth in Wimbledon with Michael Venus, left Court 5 as a loser after a playing time of 3:41 (on which, by the way, Jule Niemeier and Andrea Petkovic had also played a half marathon). For Pütz/Venus the end came against the veterans Raven Klaasen and Marcelo Melo with 6:4, 6:7 (2), 5:7, 6:1 and 6:7 (8).

Which makes the draw look a little friendlier for Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies. "KraMies" were able to hold their own against the French Doumbia and Rebouil in four sets on Wednesday and are now dealing with the duo Fery/Gill from Great Britain. And then not against Pütz and Venus, to whom the two-time French Open champions were recently defeated.
