Maria won against Jelena Ostapenko after just over two hours of play 5:7, 7:5, 7:5 and is thus in the round of eight in a Grand Slam tournament for the first time.
After losing the first set, Maria was also 1:4 behind in the second round, she fended off two match balls at 4:5 and 15:40.
Then in the third set there was an up and down, Maria couldn't break out to win at 5:4 after great returns from Ostapenko; In direct return, however, she made the break again and used her second match point for the greatest success of her career.
