It sounds like a Grand Slam final, after the very tight boxes, after the big drama: Stan Wawrinka against Novak Djokovic makes you float in memories. Of the legendary Australian Open round of 16 in 2013, which Djokovic just won 12:10 in the fifth set. Of the quarterfinals in 2014, which Wawrinka won 9-7 in the decider (he went on to win the title as well).
At the French Open final in 2015 (Wawrinka won sensationally), at the US Open in 2016 (Wawrinka won almost as sensationally).
Since? Has happened a lot. Djokovic and Wawrinka have only played each other twice, in 2019 at the US Open Djokovic had to retire; 2022 in Rome Djokovic won smoothly. Against a "Stan The Man" returning from knee surgery who has been fighting to connect ever since.
He is now back in 88th place in the ranking, and he got through two five-set matches at the French Open. But the last bit – it is missing from the now 37-year-old.
Wawrinka: Not really at home on grass
Can he do something against Djokovic on the lawn of all places? The Djoker has 30 match wins in Wimbledon, while Wawrinka has already been knocked out eleven times in round 1 or 2 and never got further than the quarter-finals (in his heyday).
"I hope he doesn't kill me," the Swiss stacked low.
However: Wawrinka has come through well so far, giving up only one set in two matches (against Tomas Martin Etcheverry, who is 29th).
Incidentally, in a direct comparison Djokovic leads 20: 6, despite the legendary Stan victories. Which in turn speaks for Wawrinka, because not many players can show that many victories against Djokovic.
