Angelique Kerber is in the third round at Wimbledon

Angelique Kerber followed Alexander Zverev into the third round at Wimbledon. The number 25 seed from Kiel won a high-class match against the Spaniard Sara Sorribes 7: 5, 5: 7, 6: 4 and now meets the Japanese Nao Hibino and Aliaksandra Sasnovich (Belarus). Zverev defeated Tennys Sandgren (USA) 7: 5, 6: 2, 6: 3, Taylor Fritz and Steve Johnson (both USA) determine his next opponent.

In an intense and fast match, in which the two opponents did not give each other anything from the start, Kerber initially seemed a little surprised by the vicious resistance of the 24-year-old Spaniard. The number 50 in the world, previously known more as a clay court specialist, consistently held against it and let Kerber run into the void again and again with her backhand slice.

Sorribes Tormo initially fends off match point

After her break to 5: 3 Kerber served for the first time for the set, but quickly fell behind in the ninth game with 0:40. The German number one fended off these three breakballs, but Sorribes turned the fourth into a rebreak. Kerber's second break to 7: 5 then brought the decision in the first round, after 70 high-class minutes, the Kiel woman used her second set ball to 7: 5.

In the second round Kerber took the initiative, Sorribes lost their strength a little. Her basic strokes became shorter, her slice more imprecise, Kerber opened the square and hit the lines at will. However, nothing was won yet, the Spaniard struck back and made up an early 0-2 deficit to make it 2-2. Kerber's second break to 4: 2 also countered Sorribes with the immediate rebreak to 4: 3.

Ostepenko and Gauff continue

At 5: 4 Kerber had a match point, which Sorribes fended off with a placed slice and a little later got the second set. In the third set, Kerber finally had the better end for himself, despite obvious problems on his left wrist: After 3:18 hours, the Wimbledon winner of 2018 converted her second match point.

After Ashleigh Barty , Cori Gauff also won her second round encounter at the largest square in the facility, the Center Court. The 17-year-old beat Elena Vesnina 6: 4 and 6: 3.
