Wimbledon: Djokovic there, Zverev of course too

Tennis world number one Novak Djokovic wants to start in Wimbledon, even if there are no ATP points in the classic lawn. Alexander Zverev will also play for the title in London.

"Yes, I intend to go to Wimbledon," said the 35-year-old Serb after his confident entry into the second round at the French Open in Paris on Monday.

Djokovic, who won the tournament in London in 2021 with a final win against Mattoe Berrettini, described the decision to exclude Russians and Belarusians as a "mistake".

Zverev loses fewer points than Djokovic

The tournament organizers from London announced at the end of April that Russian and Belarusian players would not be allowed to play in the grass highlight (June 27 to July 10) due to the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine. In response, the professional organizations ATP and WTA decided not to award world ranking points.

Alexander Zverev had already explained on Sunday in his press conference after beating Sebastian Ofner that the loss of points did not play a major role for him. After all, Wimbledon is the oldest tournament in tennis. For Zverev, the effects of the loss of points in the world rankings are not as blatant as for Djokovic, who will lose 2,000 points. Alexander Zverev "only" reached the round of 16 in 2021, for which there were 180 points,
