Right at the top of the tableau is Ashleigh Barty, the world number one who drew an opponent right at the beginning with Carla Suarez Navarro, who will be even more sympathetic than usual after having overcome cancer. Barty is still the favorite and could meet French open winner Barbora Krejcikova in the round of 16 and Bianca Andreescu in the quarter-finals if the tournament went according to the paper form.
According to the seeding list, Elina Svitolina (3) and Serena Williams (6) should contest the second quarter-finals in the upper half. However, Serena could meet Angelique Kerber in round three. The German starts against Nina Stojanovic, Williams opens against Aliaksandra Sasnovich.
Halep is missing, Sabalenka number two
After defending champion Simona Halep's late cancellation, Aryna Sabalenka will go into the tournament as number two and will initially be allowed to play against a qualifier or a lucky loser. Iga Swiatek could wait for the Belarusian in the quarter-finals. Sofia Kenin and Karolina Pliskova could form the final duel of the round of eight.
Remarkable: Petra Kvitova, two-time winner in Wimbledon, starts against Sloane Stephens, US Open Champion of 2017. Andrea Petkovic starts against the Italian Jasmina Paolini, Laura Siegemund has to play against Ekaterina Alexandrova, who is 32nd.
