The organizers of the tennis classic at Wimbledon are hoping for a higher number of spectators than initially planned. The All England Club is "confident" that it will be able to increase ticket capacities beyond the minimum of 25 percent occupancy set last month, it said in a statement on Wednesday. The hope is based on the already completed and prospective easing of the corona restrictions in Great Britain.

The Grand Slam highlight on the "holy lawn" will take place from June 28th to July 11th. Last year, the traditional tournament was canceled for the first time since the Second World War because of the corona pandemic.

"However, we also understand that given the Indian variant, there is still much debate among government and health authorities on this issue and we aim to remain flexible in our approach so that we can respond appropriately," shared the Wimbledon organizers continue with. Ticket sales are not expected to start until mid-June.

The defending champions will be Simona Halep, who beat Serena Williams in the 2019 final, and Novak Djokovic, who defeated Roger Federer in an epic final, in London.
