A comment on Novak Djokovic's Wimbledon success

Novak Djokovic's seventh title at the lawn major in Wimbledon cannot really be described as a Pyrrhic victory - neither the former world number one from Serbia nor anyone from his supervisory staff came to any real damage. But if the first magic of the 21st Grand Slam triumph is to follow, the 35-year-old will probably feel one or the other hint of disappointment.

After all, you can't celebrate carelessly when you defend your title for the third time in the "All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club" in London, only to have 2000 world ranking points deducted from your ATP points account at the end and move up four places Ranking position seven to crash. The British government's decision not to allow Russian and Belarusian players to take part in this year's Wimbledon event was more than debatable even before the tournament started, with the actual figures in black and white leaving a more than bitter aftertaste - not just for the man Belgrade but for the complete sport of tennis.

The (tennis) world urgently needs rest again

The professional umbrella organizations ATP and WTA certainly did not take the decision not to award points at the third Grand Slam tournament of the year lightly, a perfect and fair solution was practically impossible under the circumstances. And no matter how you twist and turn it, for Djokovic the two biggest catastrophes in the western world in recent years - the corona pandemic and the Ukraine war - have brought nothing but trouble, whether you understand his refusal to vaccinate or not.

And the next adversity is already inevitable for "Nole": If nothing changes in the current entry regulations of the USA and Australia until the next major highlights, Goran Ivanisevic's protégé will probably only return to Paris at a Grand Slam - tournament can go to the start. One thing is for sure: for both Djokovic and the whole world, it is time for a little more calm to return to our beloved earth.
