Wimbledon pours out prize money - and changes seedlists

Generous gesture from the organizers of Wimbledon: The Grand Slam tournament pays a total of more than 11 million euros in prize money to 620 tennis players, even though the world event had to be canceled this year due to the corona crisis. Insurance against a pandemic makes this possible.

The maximum sum that 256 professionals receive is just under 28,000 euros; according to the world rankings, they would have been qualified for the individual competitions. Qualifiers, double players or participants in wheelchair competitions receive lower sums.

In a statement, Richard Lewis, head of the All England Club, was pleased that the insurance measures made it possible to pay out to the players. Many players would have faced financial difficulties in the "months of uncertainty".

In addition, from 2021 there will be an adaptation of the seed list to the customs of the other three Grand Slam tournaments: The mode that has existed since 2002, according to which the results of the past two years on grass are taken into account for the seed list in Wimbledon, it says on the website of the most prestigious major.
