"It was tricky, especially in the first set when he had breakballs. The key to success was that I was able to take the momentum into the second set. Of course I was happy that I won the tie-break and less time on the court spent, "said Federer after his 350th Grand Slam match win.

Pouille was able to keep up well in the first set and was the slightly better player, but could not take a break chance in the seventh and eleventh game. Federer then struck a 6: 5 lead and converted his second breakball to win the set.

The second set was a straightforward matter: after a quick 4-0 lead for Federer, Pouille shortened it briefly to 4-2, just to give up the next two games.

In the third round, Federer missed the only break chance in the twelfth game, but took advantage of his opponent's weakness in the subsequent tie break. After two hours and eight minutes, he converted his third match point.
