Wimbledon: Why Nick Kyrgios' mother didn't watch the final

Nick Kyrgios has reached a Grand Slam final at Wimbledon for the first time in his career. However, the Australian's mother did not follow this live. And has a good reason for that.

At Wimbledon 2022, Nick Kyrgios managed for long stretches to primarily deal with his opponents. Sure, the Australian repeatedly discussed with the audience (if it's up to the finalist, a spectator would have watched the final with around 700 drinks down). Or the referee (as Stefanos Tsitsipas felt painfully). And of course with your own box, which had to listen to a lot in the past 14 days.

However, the latter in particular is not a problem, after all this constant dialogue (not to use the term rant) helps the Australian, as brother Christos explained to Australian news.com: "He wouldn't be our nick if he didn't fire during the game and Flame would be, and that's how he plays, that's how he gets going," said the Australian.

Box as a "valve" for Kyrgios

The box is the "pressure valve" of the Wimbledon finalist. "The pressure valve for him is, 'These people love me, I'm not saying anything to insult them or abuse them, but I just need to release some of that pressure, distract a little bit of that pressure so I can focus on my work again can." This was also discussed openly in the Kyrgios team: If it helps the Australian, then he is welcome to release some pressure in the direction of his box.

For the Australian's mother, however, it was "not a good experience" to watch her son play. Which is why they - also because of the nervousness - didn't even follow the final in Wimbledon: "I didn't see the game at all," said mother Kyrgios. "I haven't seen a single one of his games." Instead, the Australian said goodbye to bed on Sunday. "I had a very good night's sleep."

Mother Kyrgios only tracks warm-up

She followed the walk-on and the warm-up very well, but Nill Kyrgios didn't want to see more: "I even saw him on the pitch. I love seeing him run through Wimbledon, just this atmosphere. I love to see him walk out onto the pitch and see the reaction from the crowd." Mother Kyrgios only saw her son play when she watched the repeat of the match the next day.

For Nill Kyrgios, however, sitting regularly in her son's box is out of the question: "You don't want to sit in his box," said the Australian. "You really don't want that because you don't know when to stand and when to clap and when to shout. We've been there and it's not a good experience."
