Garbine Muguruza's famous catch-up race after trailing 1: 6 in the tie-break of the third set was almost crowned with success. The Spaniard had just fended off four match points, and Muguruza also dominated the rally when the score was 5: 6. The attempt to stop the Wimbledon winner from 2017 got stuck in the network, however, Cornet, who had also fended off a match point at 4: 5, moved to the semifinals at the WTA after the 4: 6, 6: 3 and 7: 6 (5) Tour 500 tournament in Berlin.

There the French meets Belinda Bencic. The woman from Switzerland also had to go the full distance against Ekaterina Alexandrova, finally prevailing 6: 4, 4: 6 and 7: 6 (4).

The other two semi-finalists will be determined in the games between Madison Keys and Ludmilla Samsonova and Jessica Pegula against Victoria Azarenka.
