The Dortmund tennis hope Jule Niemeier just missed a surprise at the lawn tournament in Berlin. The 21-year-old qualifier lost in the comeback of the WTA tournament at Hundekehlesee against world number twelfth Belinda Bencic after a strong performance 6: 4, 4: 6, 5: 7. Most recently, Niemeier had already started to soar in Strasbourg and after her first three successes at professional level only had to admit defeat in the semifinals to the later French Open winner Barbora Krejcikova.

The German number one and former Wimbledon winner Angelique Kerber (Kiel) will also be at the start in Berlin to prepare for the Grand Slam highlight in Wimbledon (from June 28th). In addition, Andrea Petkovic (Darmstadt) is in the field with a wildcard.

Berlin hosted a women's tournament from 1979 to 2008, albeit on clay back then. The premiere in the Steffi Graf Stadium on grass should have increased last year, but had to be postponed by a year due to the corona pandemic.
